What is an Antique?
This is a question I am often asked. Generally, this refers to a collectible such as a work of art, a piece of jewellery or piece of furniture that has a high value because of its age and quality. The industry standard is that an item should be at least 100 years of age, of great quality and in original condition.
It is therefore likely to be scarce to find and many examples by a particular artist or crafts person may be found in a prestigious museum. Finding quality antiques is not impossible though. It can be great fun tracking them down!
Antiques appeal
Antiques will always have a strong appeal as they were made generally before the age of mass industrialisation, requiring a careful hand and eye of the craftsman or woman. As such, after 100 years the item has produced a lovely patina, something that has been handled or used many times over. This happens especially with wood bringing out natural, warm, features.
Value
Value, however, can fluctuate according to tastes and collecting habits of the antiques market. Items can go in and out of fashion. For example, currently the Art Deco Period (c1920s – 1930s) can be valuable; and Old Master paintings tend to hold their value.
Do your research!
Remember, not everything in the above categories is potentially valuable. It is essential to do your research and buy what you like, not what you think might be a good return. You have to love it, happy to hang it on your wall, or have it on display in your home. Only then should you consider buying it for investment.
