Lovely C1910 watercolour depicting the historic city at sunset of Saint-Malo in Ille-et-Vilaine in Brittany, France. The medieval castle is visible along with surrounding passing ships, a lighthouse and sail boats set against the stunning aquamarine sea. The loose, impressionist brushstrokes wash across the dominating skyline of rich reds, yellow and purple. The golden sandy beach is visible in the foreground.
The painting is inscribed ‘St Malo’ bottom right. The artist has signed ‘Adèle Rose’ for Adèle Rose Bertha Müller, bottom left.
Adèle was a professional and sought after British artist. Seven of her works are currently held in Manchester City Art Gallery.
She was born in Manchester in 1868 and went on to have an illustrious artistic career becoming a painter, sculptor and modeller. She studied at the prestigious Manchester School of Art.
St Malo, France
The name ‘Saint-Malo’ is derived from a Welsh monk named Maclow, who initially referred to the town as Maclou. Over time it eventually became Saint-Malo.
