Attractive C1910 framed & mounted watercolour landscape depicting a country scene consisting of a tumble down cottage beside a river. In the foreground is an arched bridge covered in foliage. It’s reflection in the water forms a poetic circle. Above is a young woman looking melancholy presumably waiting for her lover. There is an empty rowing boat on the water nearby.
The painting is signed Adèle RB Muller bottom left corner.
Adèle Rose Bertha Muller (1868-1948)
Adèle was a professional and competent artist. Seven of her works are currently held in Manchester City Art Gallery.
She was born in Manchester in 1868. She had an illustrious artistic career becoming a painter, sculptor and modeller. She studied at the prestigious Manchester School of Art.
In the 1901 Census return of England & Wales her occupation was listed as ‘Artist’, quite rare for a woman of that period.
