This stunning lantern is circa 1890 and was made by the historic Val St Lambert factory in Belgium. The lanterns were made in Belgium but mainly exported to India during the late nineteenth century.

They were mainly made for the colonial market to hang in Haveli’s (large homes), club houses, places of worship and palaces. These were either lit with candles or oil lamps. The  lids would stop the soot from marking the ceiling. This lantern is not electrified but can easily be converted.

This unusual lantern has its original pressed green glass lid attached with three brass chains. It has a contrasting etched collar with floral detail around the top edge of the lantern. The collar has three decorative iron finials that hang out over the sides for the brass chains to hang from.

This one is original as found.
