Ruthless Rhymes for Heartless Homes by Harry Graham
First published in 1898, this wonderful book is written for lovers of history, poetry and those with a dark humour. As the title suggests, the book is full of macabre stories with associated meticulous illustrations. What a fabulous and unique, gift. Definitely a historic, obscure, gem.
The book covers all genres including golf, cricket, tennis, motoring, cooking and more. Each verse, written by Harry Graham, wonderfully illustrated.
Harry Graham (1874-1936) was a successful journalist, lyricist, and writer of humorous verse with black humour. He is best remembered for writing this collection of humorous rhymes.
Examples of his black humour included in this book are:
THE FOND FATHER
Of Baby, I was very fond,
She’d won her father’s heart;
So, when she fell into the pond
It gave me quite a start.
CARELESS JANE
Jane, who shot her Uncle Bill,
Said his death did not affect her,
But, which makes it sadder still,
Broke my “Hammerless Ejector”
MOTHER
When a child of tender age,
I’d a monkey in a cage
Now I have no need for pets,
Mother’s joined the Suffragettes
THE SHARK
Bob was bathing in the bay,
When a Shark who passed that way,
Punched him in seven places
- And he made such funny faces!
